In 2007, we took a huge leap of faith and moved from California to Texas. Imagine packing up your belongings, your business and moving to a city most of your friends have never heard of. (They thought we were in the witness protection program.) We thought we had done our homework and made our decision wisely.
So we headed EAST. Excited and full of energy to have a new beginning. And as we started to market our business we realized that the old ways of marketing were not working. Taking out ads in the newspaper, listing in the yellow pages, and direct mailings were not working. All of a sudden, we were lost.
There had to be a better way to reach our customers. So with that in mind, a new search to reach them started. Let me go on record to say that I’m not much of a reader, but I was willing to read every book I could get my hands on to figure this out. And then I started searching the internet trying to find the right answers.
One day I signed up for Facebook. I wasted a lot of hours playing games. I reconnected with old friends. I found some new friends. All this while still searching for the answers to reach more customers in today’s market.
Well, I’m a sucker for those little pop up ads, (that’s how we moved to Texas!) and one day there was an ad for a Facebook class. Something clicked, and I said there had to be more to it than playing games and wasting my time. So I took this class and then another one, and another one. Before I knew it, I was hooked on social media.
As I started to use social media for our business, I saw there where many other businesses not using it correctly. They were wasting their time! Shouting and no one listening. Then someone asked me what I was doing. They noticed I was having fun with my customers. I was engaging them and having conversations with them.
There is so much more to Social Media than what one thinks. It’s not about going to the bathroom or silly stuff like that. It’s about getting to know you, liking you and wanting to have that relationship with you. When the time comes to buy…. It’s you they think of. It’s you they know, like and trust! It’s you they buy from!
